Step 1: Decide on the Type of licence You Need
Before you begin the process of obtaining your truck driver’s licence, you need to determine which type of licence you require. There are several types of truck licences in Sydney, including:
Light Rigid (LR) licence: This licence allows you to drive a light rigid vehicle, which has a Gross Vehicle Mass (GVM) of more than 4.5 tonnes but less than 8 tonnes.
Medium Rigid (MR) licence:This licence allows you to drive a medium rigid vehicle, which has a GVM of more than 8 tonnes but less than 12 tonnes.
Heavy Rigid (HR) truck licence: This licence allows you to drive a heavy rigid vehicle, which has a GVM of more than 12 tonnes but less than 16 tonnes.
Heavy Combination (HC) truck licence:This licence allows you to drive a combination of vehicles, including a prime mover and one or more trailers, with a total GVM of more than 16 tonnes.
Step 2: Meet Eligibility Requirements
In order to be an eligible candidate for a Sydney truck driver’s licence, you must fulfill the following requirements:
- Be at least 18 years old
- Provide proof of identities like a birth certificate or passport.
- Have a valid Australian driver’s licence.
- Pass a medical examination.
Step 3: Complete Truck Driving Training Program
If you fulfill the eligibility requirements, you must then complete the necessary training. The training will teach you the skills and knowledge required to operate a truck efficiently and safely. Step 4: Pass Theory Test

Step 5: Pass the Practical Test

Step 6: Get Truck Driver’s licence
